Hundreds of Japanese take part in a marathon for good luck

Beginning of the year race draws in hundreds of participants in Japan.

The beginning of the year is a time of glad tidings and blessing. The Japanese celebrate this sentiment with the Lucky Man race the winner of which has good fortune bestowed upon them.

The race takes place at Nishinomiya Shrine in Japan’s Hyogo prefecture as part of an annual festival. Thousands participated this year in the race. The race pays homage to a ritual in the 14th century when locals hurried to the shrine to pray for prosperity. It is conducted as frenzied sprint and everyone is invited to participate.
