World Cup reality: When you awaken at 5 a.m. for what you thought would be the game of the day, only to learn later that the game of the day — of the tournament? — wouldn’t come for six more hours.
It was still dark when my alarm went off. Nothing new during the World Cup, but what changed was that, rather than just grab the remote and turn on the television, I got up, dressed and headed to the Mission District.
Brazil-Mexico was not a World Cup game to watch at home. The matchup, between two skilled teams and some of the world’s most festive and enthusiastic fans, demanded a social setting.
