Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar celebrates her 89th birthday on Friday.
Words will never be able to justify the greatness of this legend. Lata Mangeshkar has gifted us some real, soulful music such as Dafli Wale, Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Dil To Pagal Hai, Lukha Chupi and Tere Liye. She is one of the finest singers the subcontinent has ever produced.
A doyenne among playback singers, Lata Mangeshkar is said to have recorded over 1000 songs for Hindi films. Mangeshkar is the second female vocalist after M.S. Subbulakshmi to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001.
She is also the recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award, three National Film Awards and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award besides many others.
In 1958, the Filmfare Award for Playback Singer Female was created to award Lata Mangeshkar for her outstanding work. But that’s not all. After winning the first Filmfare for Aaja Re Pardesi, Lata won the award back-to-back until 1969. In an effort to promote fresh talent, the melodious signer gave up her award in 1969.
Her last recorded song was in 2015, in an Indo-Pak gay love story. Although she’s become selective with her playback singing, her tunes continue to be a rage even today.
Once Dilip Kumar, whom Lata addresses as her older brother rightly said, “None have been able to equal Lata’s refinement. It is very difficult for anyone to compete with her because she has invested so heavily in every person who cares for music – there’s such a lot of Lata Mangeshkar in everyone.” Indeed, Lata Mangeshkar has always been able to melt the hearts of her people with her dulcet voice.
Here are some of her evergreen songs.
