Big news from Germany as Angela Merkel resigns as the party leader. As the party members of Christian Democratic Union pay emotional farewell to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the delegates gathered to choose the successor of Angela for the party. The next successor has been selected in Hamburg, the city where Merkel was born.
64 year old Merkel will transfer the baton to Annegret Kramp Karrenbauer, who is a strong supporter of Merkel. Kramp defeated Friedrich Merfz, a fellow party member with a narrow margin. Merkel at this occasion seemed somber and stumbled in her 30 minutes long speech which was pretty uncharacteristic of her. In her speech, Merkel asked everyone to lead their country in turbulent times and avoid polarization during terror attacks, war and climate change. She also said it’s time for a new chapter for the party and she feels overwhelmed for everything she has experienced. The party delegates rose and gave a lengthy ovation to the outgoing Merkel and said “Thanks Boss”.
