Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has passed away after losing a toughly contested battle against throat cancer. Even her political opponents admired her courage and insights on political matters. Here are some facts you probably didn’t know about her.

1. She was the grand daughter of the famous wrestler Gamma Pehlwaan

Not many people know this but, Kulsoom Nawaz was the grand daughter of The Great Gamma Pehlwaan who is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all times. (Google him!)

2. She has been the first lady of Pakistan for 3 times

Even though Pakistan doesn’t have a proper Office of the First Lady like US, but being the First Lady, is no less than a honor and Kulsoom Nawaz has been on this position three times in her life. (1990-1993) (1997-1999) (2013-2017)

3. She has also served as the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from 1999 – 2002

October 1999 was probably the most difficult time in Sharif Family’s life when General Pervaiz Musharraf did a coup against then Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif. While most members of the family were behind bars, or out of the country, she resisted a dictator when most men couldn’t. She was appointed the president of PML-N and she led her party in those difficult times when people were being thrown in jail just for saying anything against the dictator.

4. She was a PhD Doctor

Most of us may know Kulsoom Nawaz as an eastern, low profile wife of a great political leader, but she was highly educated as well. She received a masters degree in Urdu Literature and then a PhD which she did after getting married to Nawaz Sharif in 1972.

5. She led a rally from Lahore to Chaghi (Balochistan) against the dictator Pervaiz Musharraf

Another thing which is credited in her name is the famous rally she did while she was the president of PML-N. She led this rally from Lahore to Sindh, Quetta and then Chaaghi (Balochistan) in those difficult times.
