44 year-old runs a 2:09 to win the Gold Coast Marathon

Kenneth Mburu Mungara won the Gold Coast Marathon on June 30th in 2:09:49. Mungara is the 40-44 age group world record holder over the marathon distance. He ran his record of 2:08:38 in 2016 in Milan, Italy.
Mungara is no stranger to the Gold Coast Marathon – yesterday was his third victory in four years. Mungara’s result is impressive regardless of age, but considering the average age of elite male marathoners is 28.9 years-old, the Gold Coast champ is running exceptionally well.
The Boston Marathon champ, Yuki Kawauchi was ninth in 2:14:51
The Gold Coast Marathon is Australia’s leading race. It’s an IAAF gold label certified race with 6,700 participants this year alone.
The women’s marathon was won by Ruth Chebitok of Kenya, who also set a new course record of 2:24:49. This is the third year in a row where the female winner has broken the previous course record at the Gold Coast Marathon.
